Kokomo Private Island

Twice a week, unless you're Kokomo.

Kadavu's only scheduled flight is Fiji Link, twice a week, to an airstrip at Vunisea. Kokomo, on the Great Astrolabe Reef, ignores it and flies its own Twin Otter.

Guests who reach Nadi by three in the afternoon can be on the reef the same day: the house seaplane keeps its own timetable.

The line we searched: Cathay Pacific from Heathrow, nonstop to Hong Kong, then Fiji Airways on to Nadi by six the next morning. The seaplane lifts at eight and is on Kokomo's jetty by a quarter to nine.

Twenty-seven hours and twenty-five minutes, door to jetty, and the last forty-five minutes belong to the house.

The place

Kokomo Private Island is on Yaukuve Levu in Fiji's Kadavu group, beside the Great Astrolabe Reef.

From Nadi it is about 45 minutes by seaplane.
