Fogo Island Inn

The fourth corner of the flat earth.

Fogo sits off an island, and Newfoundland is one too. Brimstone Head, the dome above the village, was named a corner of the Flat Earth in the 1970s; nothing since has argued otherwise.

Car and ferry

Every room at the inn faces the North Atlantic, and the only way in is by road and ferry.

The line we searched: Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow at ten past four, Toronto by evening, Air Canada to Gander the next morning at ten to eight. The house car meets the plane, drives to Farewell and boards the ferry with you.

Twenty-six hours and fifty minutes, door to door. The last leg was the cheapest part of the journey; the barrier was never the money.

At the end of the line

Fogo Island Inn stands on stilts at the edge of the North Atlantic on Fogo Island, off Newfoundland's northeast coast. Every room faces the sea.

From Gander it is a drive to Farewell and a ferry of about 45 minutes to the island.
