Deplar Farm

The farm behind the weather.

A sheep farm on the Troll Peninsula keeps a helicopter the way other farms keep a tractor: come winter, the road in is a rumour.

Thirteen suites, heli-ski guides at breakfast, and a valley in the far north of Iceland that the weather closes more often than it opens.

The line we searched: British Airways out of Heathrow at twenty-five to eight, Keflavík by ten. A taxi to the domestic airport in Reykjavík, Icelandair north at half past three, Akureyri by four. The last eight minutes are by helicopter.

Eleven hours and thirty-three minutes, door to valley, ending in the only flight in the ledger that lands at a farm.

The place

Deplar Farm is a converted sheep farm in the Fljót valley on the Troll Peninsula in north Iceland. Spring is for heli-skiing from the door; summer brings near-endless daylight and salmon rivers.

Akureyri is the nearest airport with scheduled flights; the last stretch is by road or by helicopter.
