the atlas of bespoke routing

Dublin → Cape Town

— North–south, so the obvious hub is London — and the obvious hub is often the wrong one.

Cape Town sits almost due south of Dublin, which makes the London routing the geographically sensible one: a short hop and then a single overnight flight. But the Gulf and Istanbul carriers fly it too, going a long way east before turning south, and they price it as part of their own networks rather than as an Irish departure. The detour costs hours. It quite often saves money.

§ 01

The candidates

— 4 hubs worth putting in the same search

LHRLondon
total, approx.15–17 h

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic

The short hop and one overnight. Fastest by a clear margin, and the only routing that is close to a straight line.

ISTIstanbul
total, approx.17–19 h

Turkish Airlines

A moderate dogleg east. Usually the cheapest of the non-London options and better connected than the Gulf hubs for Dublin departures.

DXBDubai
total, approx.19–21 h

Emirates

The long way round, and it shows in the total. Compensates with frequency and with fares that ignore the Irish market entirely.

DOHDoha
total, approx.19–21 h

Qatar Airways

Same dogleg as Dubai, often a little cheaper, and typically the best value of the four if you are flying business.

Totals include one connection and are approximate — schedules and layovers move. No fares here on purpose: they change daily, and the planner quotes them live rather than from this page.

§ 02

Why the hub decides it

— and why one airline's site cannot tell you

This is the clearest case in the atlas of geography and price pulling in opposite directions. Via London you are on the ground once, briefly, and asleep for the rest. Via Dubai or Doha you fly a dogleg that adds three or four hours — and lands you a fare set by an entirely different competitive market. Worth seeing both, because the honest answer changes by date.

§ 03

When to go

— the part a fare table will not tell you

The southern summer, December to February, is Cape Town's peak and the London routing sells out first. Irish school holidays compound it. In the southern winter the spread narrows and the direct-ish routing is often the cheapest as well as the fastest.

Questions

— Dublin to Cape Town, briefly

Is there a direct flight from Dublin to Cape Town?

No. London is the closest thing to a direct routing — one short hop, then a single long overnight.

Why would anyone fly Dublin to Cape Town via Dubai?

Price. The detour adds roughly four hours, and the Gulf carriers regularly price the pairing well below the London routing.

How long is the flight from Dublin to Cape Town?

About 15 to 17 hours via London, and 17 to 21 via Istanbul or the Gulf, connection time included.
