the atlas of bespoke routing

Amsterdam → Mauritius

— One short hop to Paris, or a long detour east — both land you in Mauritius the same morning.

Mauritius is a seasonal long-haul market, thin enough that the routing options behave very differently from each other. Paris is the natural European gateway and only a short hop from Schiphol. The Gulf hubs fly it as part of their Indian Ocean networks. Johannesburg comes at it from below. All four work; they are priced nothing alike.

§ 01

The candidates

— 4 hubs worth putting in the same search

CDGParis
total, approx.14–16 h

Air France

A short hop then one long overnight. The most direct shape, and usually the fastest total.

DXBDubai
total, approx.14–16 h

Emirates

Splits the journey more evenly than Paris does, with far more frequency out of Amsterdam.

DOHDoha
total, approx.15–17 h

Qatar Airways

Similar to Dubai, often a little cheaper, and typically the best value in a flat bed.

JNBJohannesburg
total, approx.16–18 h

Air Mauritius, South African Airways

From below rather than above. The longest of the four and the least frequent, but it prices independently of everything else here.

Totals include one connection and are approximate — schedules and layovers move. No fares here on purpose: they change daily, and the planner quotes them live rather than from this page.

§ 02

Why the hub decides it

— and why one airline's site cannot tell you

Thin markets produce wide spreads. On a route this seasonal, the difference between hubs on a given date is routinely larger than anything you would find on a mainstream European long-haul — and since three of the four are flying it as a spur off a much larger network, their pricing has little to do with demand out of Amsterdam.

§ 03

When to go

— the part a fare table will not tell you

Mauritius runs its high season from roughly October to April, with a sharp peak around Christmas and the new year. Cyclone season overlaps January to March, which is why the shoulder months either side are usually the best combination of weather and fare.
