Emirates Palace, pink sandstone under its own arch at the western end of the Corniche, has never once advertised a race-week rate.

The line we searched: Etihad nonstop from Heathrow at twenty to nine, Zayed International by evening, then a taxi along the Corniche, landing the eve of the grid rather than the day of it.

Nine hours and ten minutes, door to lobby. The fare is the one line the Palace lets you see in advance.
